1. Some Background:

1. UU: why & what (under construction).
   
1. * Are you tired of nearly every major religion claiming they have "the" answer and all the others "don't"? That they are excluding and frequently even fighting one another (including huge religious wars), when they supposed to be about loving? You're not alone. It seems an increasingly large percentage of Americans (I'd guess in the neighborhood of half) holdUU beliefs (such as the #1 UU principle: religious pluralism and co-existence and an individual's “FREE and responsible search for truth and meaning”, not a dictated one), especially the younger generations. Unfortunately, few Americans realize they haveUU beliefs; indeed tragically maybe only 3% of Americans even know what UU is, even though UU has over 1000 congregations world-wide!

2. Why? Well probably since UU is by design not pushy when nearly all other religions are, it takes a long time if ever for someone to hear of us. Indeed typically today people don't hear of UU until their 40s or older (also around the time they've realized (say around a midlife crisis) that the other major religions' great claims to have all the answers haven't really panned out.) But why should we wait until it's so late? Or more typically TOO late (seemingly several times more never discoverUU in time and just get burnt out with major organized religions: see the recent film Religulous (2008)). Across the globe, young people fight and die in religious wars, typically organized by older people -- who, ironically, may already be questioning the "absolute truth" of their "holy" causes.

3. Adding a catch-22 to this problem, if a young adult fortunately does discover UU before late in life, s/he shows up to a UU congregation typically to discover s/he is the only younger person there. And being the only one is especially & understandably upsetting to a younger adult, who depends heavily on networking (friends, romances, jobs) in order to figure out & build his/her life. So the Young Adult understandably takes off: "Yes, I like the beliefs, but there's no one like me to network with, which is essential for me now."

4. * This online group aims to change that. Building a list and a critical mass of UU Young Adults so events can held where there are sure to be many other UUYA there.

2. Urgency (under construction). UUYAs are in very short supply now (about 5% of a typical UU congregation); but combining members and events and discussions from across the area into one place should vastly speed up creation of the UUYA critical mass essential to making the UUYA community blossom here and everywhere.
   
3. Motivation (under construction).
1. UU brings different religions together, including different people & beliefs. and UU is careful not to state anything which we don't scientifically know. By all these and more, Unitarian Universalism has an outstanding philosophy, especially when so much of the world suffers from from religious division and war (or throws out religion all together). And, by it's own respectful design it's not pushy, when most other major religions are.
2. However
1. Seemingly as a consequence of not being pushy when most major religions are, most people don't seem to discover UU until their 40s or older; indeed is currently the bulk of the age range of every UU congregation I've seen (not counting their kids, which also typically take off by 18 or sooner).
2. And these 40s plus people want to talk about 40s plus issues (as deep philosphical matters, life crises, important social and policial problems which weren't obvious when they were younger, divorce, raising pre-school to teen-age kids, etc) plus are into a 40s plus environment (as the days of the big parties, dancing, rock music, and the latest gadgets and fashion are gone); so it's kind of like asking parents (or grandparents, or older!) to throw arockin party for teenagers - teens and older have to do that themselves. So other than having UU congregations having an outstanding program for elementary thru teens teaching them all the major religions of the world, currently there isn't much to keep the young adult around.
3. As an added catch-22, when a young adult DOES hear of UU and shows up at a congregation, they typically take one look around, see no one their age, and are gone. Indeed the problem is so bad that even kids raised in UU from a tot typically still take off by age 18 or sooner, usually not to return until they have small kids themselves. And why? For very good reason:
4. As well as not having the interests and "vibes" that young adults thrive on (2nd reason above), an essential priority for young adults is to network (generally with others their age) so they can establish their families, friends, and careers. They might love the philosophy and beliefs, but right right now they need to build a life!
5. But other religions, especially conservative ones, are driven (often by docterine) to convert, so even where their philosophies seemingly go overboard in at least the long term and/or by scientific evidence, they make it up now by catering to if not seducing the population of young adults with the things they love & want now: modern rock music & bands, stage performances, YouTube videos & social networking, high tech, fashion, and massive groups that young adults love. For instance in just 2009 September right here in Orange County (which is still not very religiously conservative by US standards), one exclusively-Christian group (note the word "excluding") filled up Anaheim Stadium twice with young adults, both Saturday and Sunday, to hear "THE"word, drawing in young adults from as far as San Diego! It was so big, it even made front page of the local top newspaper (OC Register).
   
6. So though UU has over 1000 congregations worldwide, UU population percentage-wise UU is shrinking! And while the UU philosophies are outstanding and loving & inclusive, in the typical UU congregation today, there isn't much immediate-stuff for the young adult.
   
7. * UUYA! aims to help put an end to this. It aims to reverse this terrible trend: make UU big, andbring the youth into UU. And even more important, it aims to truly help young adults everywhere. And how? By catering to what Young Adults want & need. By actively promoting, and promoting hard. And by building local critical masses of young adults around the globe.

2. ^L3EEWJ:  Membership criteria & evolution:

1. On Young Adult age range.
   
1. The target range we pick is as wide as possible in order be maximally inclusive:
1. For the lower bound, we use "a legal adult" (instead of say 18) because 18 may not apply in other countries and might even vary in the US with emancipation procedures for people under 18. Even more important, we want to insure members know that they are dealing with legal adults (and make it very clear when they're not) as when adults deal with non-adults (children) and get into huge problems (legally, morally, and taboos) with potential adult-child romance and sex (which then is always statutory rape if not much worse) and with other possible inappropriate involvements as possibly sharing/teaching something certain parents don't permit.
2. For the upper bound, we use "30s looking & thinking",
   * going by general appearance rather than exact numerical age as that's generally much more critical (in interactions) and also less arbitrary so not abruptly excluding than exact numerical age.
   * and "30s" as a max because generally above that, age becomes noticeable and having a child (for a woman) is often impossible or dangerous.
   
3. So with a range of ~18 to say ~42 (30s looking), the target ages range by ~25 years (1/4 century), which is seemingly maximally inclusive while still potentially catering to the same interests.
4. While it's seemingly essential to mention some age numbers in order to concisely communicate, I think it's key to always remember that the point our saying an age range is NOT the numbers but (1) to specify the type of issues & interests being addressed, (2) to specify general appearance (as appearances also matters, especially in networking), plus (3) to avoid legal issues (since present laws define an adult/minor by a numerical age).
   
5. Based on years of personal experience, this unique definition of "Young Adult" was designed 2009.10.07-17 by me DestinyArchitect (plus my mother adding the very important "& thinking").

Every other young adult group I've seen (and I've looked at dozens) just gives fixed numbers (as "20 to 35", with some more modern ones just adding the word "ideally") which typically don't cover enough range and also typically finds itself abruptly excluding people (a bit older or younger) or else making exceptions without clear reasoning why.

3. ^L6CC8D: Affiliation with the owners of the name “Unitarian Universalism” and “Unitarian Universalist”

1. ^L6CDCQ: Since going live in 2009.10 (with the Orange County chapter), we had been operating successfully for 8 months, including working fairly closely with 1 or more UU leaders in all 4 UU congregations closest to me, so also implicitly endorsed by every UU congregation really aware of us.  The only real problems were:
   
1. ^L6CEFJ: that virtually no young adults wanted to join UU (a religion, and one almost none had heard of), a problem which was even worse that I had estimated.  But still we built over 20 members.  And we probably would have had double that or more if it weren't for...
2. ^L6CEGT: (being kept hidden from me) the underhanded stuff going on (what I saw of it, I had thought it was just accidents) which I later found was likely happening much bigger than I had ever imagined (see Expect pioneers to have enemies; UUYA! &I are no exception L6ANYN) --since they key person doing it had a title everyone trusted, I never really suspected him.
   
2. ^L6CCRU: Then a representative for the owner of the Unitarian Universalist name (the Young Adult Coordinator of the Pacific Southwest District of UUA) suddenly emailed me requesting we take down our site in 3 days and admittedly without even looking at and knowing us.  The rep would also not tell who brought us to their attention, nor even tell me who told her our site URL (rather she avoided the question by answering "You can find it easily via Google.").
   
1. ^L6CCUL: This un-UU treatment of us (in violation of UU principles 1 & especially 2 especially "justice, equity & compassion in human relations") was probably in response to District being tricked (by misleading info on us, from a few UU leaders even I used to trust) and falling for it (not carefully asking both sides) exactly as described (if not predictable) per the situation detailed in Expect pioneers to have enemies; UUYA! &I are no exception L6ANYN.
2. ^L6CDW4: The request was was also extreme & unnecessary: there was no one complaining they got an incorrect impression of UU from our group (though quite a few claiming they discovered UU thanks to our group) --  well that is no one except our perhaps now envious enemies mentioned above, but unfortunately their big titles & trust could be easily abused, and likely were.
3. ^L6CEZ4: Not surprising if she was mislead, it appeared the rep didn't understand: the rep was saying we needed the endorsement of local churches but we span the county, so cover 5 churches, and indeed that's why one of the local churches told us to contact the rep as they thought endorsement would come from a district level.
   
4. ^L6CE17: And the request would be killer:
   
1. due to (unfortunate) technical limitations of our host (Meetup.com) there was no way one could turn-off or take-down the site without destroying it.
2. ^L6CESJ: The email said I needed endorsements but it seems unlikely I could get endorsements for an online group nobody could see, including then not even the rep herself.
   
5. ^L6CE2U: Still within the 3 days I addressed the rep's concern:
1. ^L6CE44: I put at the top of every main page

2. I canceled all upcoming events and stopped all future events, that way we were not actually holding any "activities" under the UU name, per her email.
   
3. ^L6CER1: I emailed back the rep saying I was and am cooperating and asked her to contact me back, including telling me who told her.
   
3. ^L6CDR6:But the rep did not reply for a week or two. So I called again and she said she'd call back. I told her I'd emailed her.
   
   
4. ^L6CDKI:Then 2010.07.20(Tue) the District Young Adult rep called back: a most disturbing call.
1. This was the first time she was contacting me back so we could really talk.
   
2. ^L6H0NV: She still hadn't checked her email, and was just annoyed that our site was still up.
3. ^L6H0P5: I asked if she looked at it, but she said she didn't care to and didn't need to (!), all that she could say was that she wanted it down.  -- in conflict with her job description as young adult facilitator.
4. ^L6H0Q5: And, as mentioned, “The rep would also not tell who brought us to their attention, nor even tell me who told her our site URL (rather she avoided the question by answering "You can find it easily via Google.").”
5. ^L6H0QY: She also made clear to me that, no, she needed the endorsements from local congregations, that it didn't matter that we were county-wide (though she didn't explain why).  And though she just told me this right now on the phone, she wanted those endorsements immediately or else she wanted the site down..
   
6. ^L6CFHX: I said "but you just told me. Until now, I thought the endorsements would come from you; indeed a local congregation just me to get it from you, why I was contacting you. So we need time to get endorsements, that can't be done immediately."  She didn't seem respond, nor express any empathy,just kept repeating she wanted the site down.
7. ^L6CFC2:So  I told her that I had already fixed the site, added the disclaimers at the top so no one could get confused, canceled and stopped all activities (events) per compliance with her later, but she said she hadn't even looked at the disclaimers I put there and stuff I changed, nor did it matter, the site just had to come down.
8. ^L6H1K2: I explained the problems with taking the group site down: that Meetup provided no way to turn it off, and the only way would be to destroy it, and Meetup provided no backup, but she seemed not to care.
9. ^L6CFTShe also had no interest it seemed in finding out about this group we had created & run successfully for months.
10. And she wasn't telling me anything of what was behind all this.
11. ^L6CFQD: Especially with her insisting the site come down, and without knowing anything of it, her behavior was so counter to her job description (destroying UU young adults instead of facilitating) that I frankly told her "I am starting to doubt your intentions", but she seemed not to let up.
12. ^L6CG7E: But perhaps from truthfully telling her that Meetup doesn't even have an "off" switch, fortunately I was able to persuade the rep to allow us to just make the site Private, something I said I could do, but I don't think it would do anybody any good.  Still, the she wanted it, so I said I would do it.  This of course would even prevent her from seeing the site, but it didn't seem she gave a crap.
13. ^L6CG8Q: Alarmed by her request and her highly uncaring tone, I told her "Maybe you've been played. Indeed it totally feels like it" and gave her a synopsis of the situation detailed in Expect pioneers to have enemies; UUYA! &I are no exception L6ANYN. But she had no response to this, acting like someone robotic-ally executing and consciously refusing to give out any information.
14. ^L6H1VX: As part of that, I explained to District that we had been operating for all these months (the first 8) with no problem, and the implicit endorsement of 4 congregations, until this slander and saboge was done on us, but she had no response.
15. ^L6H1WR: I explained to her, as part of operating sucessfully for all these months, there was no rush now, but she had no response.
16. ^L6H1XL: I asked her what was motivating her on this sudden odd request, but she would not give any additional details.
17. ^L6CGF5: The next day I finished making the site Private and SMS'd her as positively as I could.

4. ^L6CC9M: Some History of our organization

1. UUYA! International and the first chapter, Orange County,CA,US, were originated and founded 2009 October by me DestinyArchitect.  But my original core idea (to create a critical mass) started in when I saw my first UU congregation --way back in about 2002!  This is how the idea developed:
   
1.  Back in about 2001, I was delighted to discover UU but very disappointed to discover at seemingly all UU congregations the age was 40 on up.  But ever since my first UU congregation, I saw the problem was not that young adults didn't agree with the philosophy (rather plenty if not most did, and the percentage seemed to be increasing); rather the problem was that congregations didn't have a critical mass of young adults (plus also non-whites, BTW); so the young adult (or non-white) would show up, not see anyone like him/her, at best stay for one service, and be gone.

* ---- So immediately I started telling UU congregations across my county at that time, Los Angeles, to have a greeter to spot young adults (and non-whites) as they arrived to church and immediately mention to him/her "Oh, we're having a young adult (or more mixed race) meeting soon, let me get your email" and then, once enough email addresses had been collected to make this critical mass, email out this bunch and have such a meeting.  And every congregation agreed I had a great idea but none of them took action.  And while I frequently said I would help, I wasn't willing (nor did I think it smart) to do all the work myself if the existing members weren't going do some of the work as well.
1. So for years nothing happened; and I proudly called myself and spread the word about UU, but I didn't attend any congregation much because none had attendees my age.
   
2. Then I discovered the Young Adult group of UUSM, called FUUSION; this the first real group of UU young adults I'd ever seen, small (about 8 regular members) but sustaining; that was inspiring.  But it was far from me (the other side of the county); so nothing changed much.
3. Then about 2 years later, after moving to neighboring Orange County, I discovered not too far from me another UU young adult group, of OCUUC, the OCUUC-YA (see UUYA-US-CA-OC's About page), and this group had about 25 active members, and even a part-time paid young adult leader “AJ”.  I was very impressed, and slowly started attending events (slow because the group still wasn't large/diverse enough for my own tastes; for instance there were virtually no Asians, and I feel especially at home with these Asians.  So I was just doing it not for my gain, but to be support theUU young adult cause).
4. Simultaneously I became increasingly involved & impressed with Meetup.com.  But these two UUYA groups were both on Yahoo Groups (older local-group technology), which started looking increasingly wasteful & primitive by comparison.  So I started thinking and lightly suggesting: How about instead a Meetup group forOCUUC-YA?  But it seemed the organizers hadn't really heard of Meetup.  So I thought I'd start a Meetup group to show them.

But then I thought, OCUUC isn't really quite in my area (about a 30-minute drive away), so if I'm going to go to the trouble (and monthly expense) to create & attend aUU young adult group, why not make it in my area?  But then I thought: But then what congregation will it be a part of? --especially since I live half-way between two congregations and, worse, none of them have young adult groups, nor many young adults.  So I just figured I'd make aUU young adult Meetup centered around me (since I was paying for it) that's not associated to any congregation.

But then I thought: “That's kind of wierd if not weak: just some floating group centered centered around me, and not really connected to any congregation".   Yes, Meetup's technology and establishment is actually powerful enough to make that happen: indeed creates groups "out-of-thin-air", with no physical groups founding it or even any other group like it nearby.  But still I thought I could do better; how could I tie to existing groups?  So I thought: Make the group cover all south Orange County.   Then I could include my two close congregations, and hopefully some members ofOCUUC-YA, since they were on the border with north OC..
7. But then I thought: there really aren't many Meetups for just 1/2 a county (as S. OC), but rather for the who66e county (as Meetup.com/Got-OC);  and for that matter, how to classify places as Costa Mesa (where bigOCUUC-YA was) which is sort of half-way in between: there was no formal definition of "S. OC" vs. "N. OC " around the boarders.  And then I or someone would have to go to all the trouble and expense to also make a separate (but largely identically structured) N.OC group, and boarder folks (as big OCUUC -YA) would have to join both.  Way too much trouble!  So I decided to make a group covering all Orange County.   That made sense:
1. It was simple. 
   
2. It allowed me to easily (and clearly) incorporate UU congregations and UU YA groups & stuff within the county, as that was the group's job: to cover the whole county.
   
3. And the distance of a county was about as far as someone would want to drive/commute and still consider something "local".
4. And (likely the most key point of all), by sourcing across the whole county, there then were enough people to likely reach this essential critical mass!
   
8. But then (around 2009.10.01) I thought, well for that matter, I still am fairly regularly in the next county (Los Angeles).  How could I minimize & standardize the work when a group for that county is created.  And so I thought about factoring out all the UUYA stuff that every regional group would have (and putting it on a shared website), making it then very easy to set up chapters/branches everywhere (like a cookie-cutter) as then setting up a local chapter would just a simple matter of local tailoring (mostly very simple & obvious geographic decisions, not having to reinvent policy).  And I came up with
   
1. this UUYA! International, plus
   
2. the standard chapter address http://Meetup.com/UUYA-<country>-<state>-<county> and
   
3. even the logo layout (which has a standard design for UUYA! and then area (lower left & below) to append on the county name plus logo).
9. Then 2009.10.09~ I came up with:
1. the UUYA! logo elements: a young person carrying an Olympic torch where the flame was the UU chalice (which has a flame!).  The Olympic torch made all the right suggestions: youth (young adult, who Olympians are), strength, active, carrying & spreading the flame (the light & the word), and the flame wasUU!
2. Plus accordingly the words "UUYA!" to be pronounced "UU-Yah!"
   
10. Then right away from just that description, 2009.10.10-15 my mother created the logo in Photoshop (including picking all the fonts & artwork), and did an outstanding job IMHO.
    
11. For the UUYA! shared & International text, I decided to host it on my http://Blogger.LoveRules.Info site as:
1. the universal & inclusive beliefs of UU fall under the topic of general "Love Rules" (note most religions wouldn't qualify),
   
2. it promotes the http://Blogger.LoveRules.Info site which is/is-becoming very good IMHO and carries an important message (about the the rules of love and social rules) which is also related and likely of interest toUUs, 
3. it brings me feedback & contributions & ad revenue :-)  (though this likely won't remotely pay me back for all this work, it's a nice start)
   
4. and I don't have another site ready to host it on, and another website site of quality is notable work.
